innovative membrane construction

Ludwigsburg Spider

Near the building section known as the Forum is a two storied central square between several buildings on the campus of the College of Education in Ludwigsburg. In the early seventies, a textile roof was installed which is partly placed over the square and partly over the open ground beneath it. From a central foundation, 5 curved supports radiate outwards. Five saddle-shaped membrane fields are spanned between the supports that are also attached to additional foundations by means of steel ropes at two points on each section.
Based on the original geometry, the complete support structure with all connecting details was newly designed. The previous curved wooden trusses were replaced by a narrow steel pipe construction and the textile roof structure completely newly planned. Textil Bau GmbH undertook the production and installation.
